A successful comedian uproots his family from their comfortable life to embark on a bold missionary journey to the Dominican Republic, discovering that the lives they change may just be their own.
How it started
Mike Williams learned at an early age how to use humor to cope with extremely difficult circumstances. He grew up poor and in a dysfunctional home in Chicago.
God rescued him and planted him into an adopted (Christian) family. He used his ability to make people laugh, becoming a highly successful comedian booking national tours. But behind the crowds and the noise, he wasn’t happy.
He feels called to help kids like him – the forgotten and needy. He shares his discontent with his wife, Terica, and they decide to pack their bags and head to the Dominican Republic.
He is assigned to a small community center where the locals are jaded by past hurts. He instantly sees many practical needs and tries to address them through the proper channels. The higher ups don’t help – this foreigner will abandon his crusade soon enough, they assume.
Mike is committed to his cause and joins with another missionary, Daniel, whose family has the same heart for Jesus and kids. When too much red tape blocks their path, Mike and Daniel decide to start a mission of their own to meet the needs of a local village.
Cups Mission
CUPS MISSION is a group of Christians who saw the plight of very young girls who were being trafficked nightly on the open streets of the Dominican Republic. Their rescue and recovery would require a change in the mindset of their families.
Working in the poorest of communities targeted by the traffickers, the mission provides Christian discipleship, family counseling, nutrition, medical care, and vocational education. This provides the foundation for a new life with hope and a future.
This same foundation is working successfully in the Malawi, Africa project and has seeded the Mexico City project.
